HOW TO ADOPT

General Adoption Information

Whether you plan to adopt a cat, kitten, dog, or puppy, it is essential to keep in mind that you are making a 10 to 20 year commitment to that animal. Since most of the animals available for adoption have already had one or more homes, it is essential that the animals be placed in a new, loving, and permanent home.

Adopt
ions are completed at the Champaign PETsMART, the Bloomington PETCO, or at Hill Animal Care veterinary clinic in Mahomet, IL.  Adopters receive valuable coupons from the store at the time of adoption.  You may even see our "strolling adoptables" like Hazel (left, adopted in Oct 2005).

Where to See Us

CATsNAP cats are in foster homes or at one of two adoption sites. Cats can be viewed:

  • Online at www.catsnap.petfinder.com
  • At the PETsMART Luv-a-pet Adoption Center. Generally, 5 to 8 cats are up there on any given day.
  • At Hill Animal Care veterinary clinic at 609 S Division St, Mahomet, IL (see map at right).  Clinic Tel: (217) 586-6800. Generally, 3 to 5 cats are there on any given day.
  • By appointment at the foster home, at the Champaign PETsMART store, or at Hill Animal Care.

If you would like to know which cats are up at PETsMART or at the Hill clinic in Mahomet, please look through our Petfinder listings.  We will be glad to arrange a time for you to visit with one of our fabulous felines wherever is most convenient for you.

Adoption fees reimburse our not-for-profit organization for the extensive veterinary care the animals receive prior to adoption.  Included in the adoption fee are:

  •  Vaccination against Panleukopenia (Distemper), Rhinotracheitis, and Calicivirus [cats] or DHLPP [dogs]

  •  Vaccination against Rabies (if animal is over 4 months of age)

  •  Testing for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) [cats] or Heartworm [dogs]

  •  De-worming, flea, and ear mite treatment

  •  Sterilization of the animal prior to adoption; no exceptions

  •  Microchipping as mandated by state law

  •  One free veterinary exam within 10 days of adoption at participating clinics

  •  One month of FREE, no-obligation pet insurance through ShelterCare.com

  •  Follow-up 48 hours post-adoption to make sure the adoption and transition are going smoothly.  Assistance and referrals are available at this time.

Kittens require a series of inoculations, so adopters will most likely be responsible for the cost of additional vaccinations. Moreover, all cats often need follow-up parasitic treatment to ensure 100% removal.

ADOPTION FEES
Individual adult or juvenile cats (6 months and older) are available for $75; kittens under 6 months are $100.  Buddy Discount: If adopting 2 cats, the second adoption is half price.

The adoption fee for dogs over 1 year is $100; dogs under 1 year are $140.

APPLICATIONS & ANIMAL GO-HOMES
Adoptions can be completed only after you have completed an adoption application.  Applications are available from a PETsMART employee or on our website.  Completed applications are then reviewed by our organization. Please allow 24 hours for application review, which may include verification of the information provided.  An adoption may be completed during scheduled adoption hours.

ADOPTIONS THAT DON'T WORK OUT
Please understand that you are not purchasing an animal from us; you are adopting a lifelong companion. If you are not sure that your new companion will "work out" for any reason, please do not adopt from us until you are certain. The adoption fee covers our costs associated with the adoption, including sterilization, vaccinations, and boarding. We are unable to return your adoption fee in the event that you change your mind about an animal.  In certain circumstances, we are willing to apply the paid adoption fee toward another animal.

Although we take every precaution to ensure that your new companion will be healthy, some animals come into our organization with an incubating disease; and there is always some risk of disease transmission when unrelated animals are housed under one roof. We will not offer an obviously sick animal for adoption, and we test for diseases where feasible, but we cannot guarantee that your pet will be disease-free. For this reason, we cannot pay vet fees associated with a sick animal or refund your adoption fee if your animal is sick.  However, we do provide all adopters with one month of free pet insurance, which covers illness within 30 days of adoption.  You, the adopter, are responsible for activating it.
